Obituary

Anthony Charles (Tony) Charwick died on May 28, 2021, at the age of 98.

Tony was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. He attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy, graduating in March 1944, obtaining a B.S. in Marine and Electrical Engineering with distinction. Tony joined the Merchant Marines and sailed on May 1944 as an Engineering Officer. He sailed in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific theaters of World War II. After nine years he ended his sea career as Chief Engineer on the first super tanker.

He owned and operated the Chesapeake Boat Co. at Chesapeake City, MD, after which he was employed by Maryland Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. in Baltimore, Maryland as a supervisor. Several years later he joined the American Bureau of Shipping as a surveyor. During his 32 years at ABS he was Principal Surveyor of Scandinavia, Assistant Principal Surveyor of the Mediterranean, and Principal Surveyor of the east coast United States. While stationed in Sweden he was appointed as the USA consular agent of Gothenburg. In 1958 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserves as Lieutenant JG. During his retirement years he enjoyed yacht building and sailing.

Tony was predeceased by his beloved wife Elly of 67 years, his parents, brothers Frank (P.E.), Monsignor Sigmund, and Monsignor Joseph, and his sister Helen.

He is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Mary Vernon (George), Cynthia Bland (Ian), and Anita Boie (Ken). He is also survived by his grandchildren Sarah Vernon and George A. Vernon, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans’ Cemetery and will be private.
