Obituary for Joel David Secundy

Joel David Secundy age 52, beloved partner, father, brother and friend passed away August 28, 2022 after a courageous 3-year battle with stage 4 colon cancer. Joel is preceded in death by his parents Robert L. Secundy and Marian G. Secundy. He was a devoted father and is survived by his beloved children Robert L. Secundy, Lillian G. Secundy and Oliver J. Secundy; his sister Susan S. Secundy; his life partner Carrie A. Ruddy and her son Shawn W. Fisher; and a host of relatives and very special friends.

Born on September 16, 1969, in Fairfax Virginia, he was raised in Reston Virginia which always held a special place in Joel’s heart. It was a community where he learned to play soccer and evolved to play for the Maryland State Team. He attended Lake Anne Elementary school and Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington DC. While at Woodrow Wilson he also attended the Congressional Page School. Joel received his BS in Political Science from Morehouse College in 1993 and his Master’s in Business Administration from Columbia University in 2003.

Joel was a charismatic marketing executive who held senior positions at MBNA Corporation, Citi Bank and in 2009, during President Barack Obama’s Administration a Presidentially Appointed position as the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the United States Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration. After his term as Deputy Assistant Secretary, he became Vice President of Strategy at Brand USA North America.

Joel was a kind, caring and loving soul who earned the love and respect of many friends throughout his life and his soul mate Carrie Ruddy. Carrie was his constant and faithful companion during his long struggle with cancer. Joel was surrounded by family in his final days. He shared tender moments with his children and in his final hours some of his dearest friends and family spoke words of love, comfort, and support to Joel. Joel passed peacefully with Carrie and his dear childhood friends, Billy Wilks, and Marty Taylor by his side.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday September 16, 2022, at the Salem Baptist Church of Roslyn on Woodland Avenue in Abington, PA.

In lieu of flowers, we will be setting up a support/educational scholarship fund for Joel’s children, Robert, Lillian, and Oliver. More information to come.
