Obituary for Juan Alicea

Juan Alicea, age 90, of Wilmington, formerly of Garnet Valley, PA, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 15, 2022.

Juan was born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico to Rosa Maria Maldonado Velez and Silverio Alicea Serrano. He was raised with 8 brothers and 8 sisters.

He lived in Philadelphia before moving to Garnet Valley with his late wife Mary. They resided there for at least 60 years while raising their 4 children.

Juan worked in Container Research with his wife. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and he and Mary volunteered at the Naamans Creek County Manor Nursing Home.

Juan loved being outside in mother nature. He enjoyed the beach, swimming, fishing, crabbing, grilling and making rice and beans. He also liked teaching the kids how to cut wood and crush cans.

Juan was always helping people no matter what. Whether it was taking them somewhere they needed to go or helping them move things, he was there. Juan learned at a young age to work hard by helping to maintain his family’s property in Puerto Rico. His mother rosa also taught him to have respect for others.

Juan adored his wife Mary Alicea, who he lost in June. He is also preceded in death by his parents and his children Kathleen Durrell, John Cassidy, Sharon Snyder, and Terrence Cassidy.

Survivors include his children, Benjamin Rivera, Miriam E. Alicea, Juan A. Alicea, Ana C. Alicea-Bondon, Miguel Alicea, and Carmen Alicea; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday October 6, 2022 at Nichols – Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 East Justis Street Newport, DE 19804. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM. Burial will be private.
