Obituary for Marie F. Breternitz

Marie F. Breternitz, age 88, of Newark, Delaware, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 18, 2021. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.

Marie graduated from Springfield Commerce High School in 1950 located in Massachusetts, where she spent the earlier years of her life. Later in life, she graduated from the University of Delaware Legal Assistant Program in 1981. Marie was an Executive Assistant for Parks & Recreation for nearly 30 years when she retired.

Marie married young and had three children who were the “Center of Her World.” She was a Sunday School Teacher, Brownie Leader, Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She also volunteered her time at her children schools and activities. She raised her children in the Christian Faith where the Bible was the foundation of her family.

Marie always enjoyed taking Continuing Education Classes through-out her life. Her interests included: painting, stenciling, crocheting, knitting, sewing, making porcelain dolls and writing in calligraphy. For physical activity she enjoyed swimming, playing tennis and long walks, especially on the beach. She was an avid traveler and loved Rehoboth Beach, where her family vacationed for many years.

Marie was a quiet, resourceful, intelligent, independent, strong, resilient and creative woman. She was an avid listener and always had encouraging “Words of Wisdom” which we will all miss!!!

Marie was preceded in death by her oldest daughter Brenda M. Rex. She was the oldest child of four children in her family of origin. Her siblings predeceased her and included: Marcella Stebbins, Joseph Meunier and Sharon Pottier.

Survivors include her children, Robert L. Breternitz III (Lois) and Cynthia M. Kelly (Daniel), and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her precious cat “Sheba” who kept her company will reside with the family.

A special note of thanks goes out to Marie’s Home Health Aide and Companion Joyce Wright, who assisted Marie faithfully for five years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 15 at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, Delaware 19711.
