Obituary for Mary Marie Young

Mary Marie Young
(Born January 1, 1940; died October 19, 2022)

Marie Young, resident of Canby, California, departed this life on October 19, 2022, while visiting family in Wilmington, Delaware. She was 82.

Marie was born in Lumberton, North Carolina and graduated from Magnolia High School in Robeson County. She attended Pembroke State University for a year, before leaving school to begin a family. She was a business owner and worked at various jobs over her life, including in retail sales, as a dental technician, and most extensively as a cosmetologist and hairdresser. For several years she owned and managed a hair salon in Severn, Maryland.

She is survived by her four children, Victor, Grant, Derek, and Matthew; her sisters Barbara Anne Fink and Lou Revels; her brothers Willie Ray and James Earl Revels; her granddaughter Cheyenne; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Perhaps the best single word to describe Marie would be “caregiver”. She sought to encourage her friends and family to excel and to stretch themselves. Her strong Christian faith was a constant presence in her life, and through the various challenges of life she was a source of strength and support to her family, her children, and their spouses.

She loved to purchase clothes for her children, even when the clothes were not particularly needed. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening, and for many years maintained a vegetable garden at her home. Memorably, she taught her children how to can tomatoes and how to make spaghetti sauce for dinner when she would be late coming home from work.

Her only real flaw was probably a tendency to neglect her own well-being so she could take care of others. When her own mother’s health began to fail, Marie moved back to her home in Lumberton and cared for her through her final days. That generosity of spirit was evident in everything she did.

She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Rest in peace, Marie!
