Obituary

Gloria Hayes was born on July 12, 1946 in Halifax County, North Carolina. She entered into eternal rest on January 26, 2021.

At an early age her family moved to Norfolk, VA and later to Philadelphia, PA. Gloria received her formal education in the Philadelphia public school system. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School. After high school she met and married Stanley Lee Hayes. From this union came two children, Stanley Jr and Stacey Allen.

Gloria played softball as a teenager for Mill Creek Recreation Center in West Phila. She played the short stop position. She was well liked and loved to dance. She enjoyed spending time with family members. In early adulthood, she accepted Christ as her savior. Later in life she rededicated her life to Christ and occasionally attended worship services at Alpha Worship Center in Bear, De with her sister and Brother-in law.

Gloria was employed at Philadelphia General Hospital as a nursing assistant until its’s closing. She then was employed with the Philadelphia Water Dept, in shut off unit, until she retired after 30 years.

Gloria was a true trend setter. Wearing blond hair, skinny jeans and miniskirts way ahead of their time. She was a dedicated and hard worker. You could always spot her in that blue and white truck on her way to shut off somebody’s water. She was small but mighty.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory: two aunts, Cora Bracey (Ervin), Elsie Edmond; one uncle, Earl McPherson; two brothers, Robert, Clyde; three sisters, Mary, Patricia and Valencia (Donald); two sons, Stanley Jr, Stacey (Lynell); eleven grandchildren, Stanley III, Sierra, Tanisha, Theresa, Ain, Stacey, Taylor, Christian, Stacey, Kayla and Melanie; and a host of great-grands, nephews, nieces, cousins and good friends.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2:30-3:30 pm on Saturday, February 6 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St. Newport, DE 19804. Masks and social distancing will be required along with a capacity limit in the funeral home. Services will be private.
